Chrome Painting is simply called today as chrome. It is a technique in painting wherein a slim layer of chrome paint is applied in the plastic or metal object such as chrome paint for cars. The paint chrome serves a lot of purpose; it can be for decorating, to prevent corrosion, to minimize the maintenance and to increase the strength of the surface. If Chrome effect paint is done for artistic purposes, the lesser quality of black chrome paint is usually applied.
History of Chrome Painting
Before the Chrome Painting, the earliest type of plating was accidentally discovered by Thomas Boulsover during 1743 when the silver was overheated and melted. The mixture of copper and silver was called the Sheffield plate. He found out that the mixture was sturdy, and it remained in one composition when he was trying to form it. The Sheffield plate got an upgrade during 1770 to cater the objects that contain internal surface. They named it as the “double-sandwich” technique.
Painting Chrome will then be discovered after long years of the introduction of electro plating. In the year 1911-1914, George J. Sargeant performed a comprehensive study about chromium deposition wherein he was trying to manufacture a 10-pound set of electrolytic chromium within one constant run. Unfortunately, Sargeant failed in doing it; however his study has attracted a lot of attention and has become the basis to the advancement of the chrome paint job of Fink and Eldridge.
With the help of a colleague named John Pratt Sr. and his association with the Metropolitan Museum, Fink and Eldridge was able to accumulate the funding that they need to support their Chrome finish paint. This has prompted the establishment of Chemical Treatment Company in New York last 1924. This company has a rival company which was started by Schwartz named the Chromium Product Corp.
Chrome Painting products that time were created as a form of advertisement. They create a plate of advertisement and job from the month of June 1925-1926. The success of chrome paints became a sensation as it offers them a perfect form of advertisement with the highest level of durability, and has a low rate of corrosion.
On the 22nd of July, 1926, the two first companies that offer chromium products merged into a single company. The merge prompted the introduction of Chromium Corporation of America. This has led to the numerous operations of chrome paint job shops in large cities. Due to this, the company expenses have exponentially increased without a proper plan of ROI thus to avoid the increasing overhead cost, Mr. Pratt withdrew from the company last December of 1926. Mr. Pratt died a few months after.
The Year 1927 of Chrome Painting Up to the Age of Modern Electroplating
One of the pioneers of the commercial manufacturing of chrome painting left the original company to work with a new firm in Detroit called General Chromium Corporation. During that time, a man named Philip P. Hale was working as a supervisor and after just a few years, he was promoted as the VP of Nicholl Chromium Comp. Inc and only few months later, this will be renamed to Nicholl-Hale Chrome Service. During the same time, someone is exerting much effort to incorporate his engineering methodologies in their paint chrome procedure in the original company. Marvin J. Udy was studying about electroplating wherein the right amount of current should be applied on the surface area. Udy is proud about his discovery that chrome painting should be executed with at least 4.2 volts. This claim by Udy has prompted a heated discussion among the board members, but all of them were unable to discourage Mr. Udy. Udy will then create a partnership with Hale to create a composite bus bar. This painting chrome process will allow the objects to be plated to be attached to the cathode bar and the lead on the anode bar. The entire chrome paints process will be done by running a single electric current density. In 1931, Udy was terminated and never again did he continue in his chrome paint jobs. Hale will then apply for a patent on the discovery of Udy. The discovery of Udy was upgraded by his successor named Clarence Peger.
In the year 1940, Chrome painting will get an interesting turn. The test which was called Dubpernell Test has been badly depicted in the pages of the history book due to its secret origin. In this test, they will apply a skinny layer of the copper on the Chrome paint, and they will look at the level of porosity of the object as well as signs of cracking. The project will be later revealed to the public due to a social discussion during a train ride by Professor Baker. This has lead to the year of the Modern Electro Plating.
After the 2nd World War, the government of France launched a centre of study that is focusing on Hard Chromium. This centre was led by Mr. Morisset. The centre was kept in operation for around 32 years. In the year 1948, Mr. Morisset published a book with 220 pages that gave comprehensive information about the function and the uses of the hard chromium. In 1952, he again launched a new book that is solely for chrome painting. Though the textbook is mostly in French Language, it was after translated in the English Language. This guideline was referred to as the “bible” of any chrome paint jobs. The guidebooks by Morisset were also translated in the Japanese and Russian Language.
The book was then followed by a more comprehensive text on chrome painting innovation last 1961, but the textbook was not translated. Another book on painting chrome was released in 1974 and was translated in English in 1980.
The Revolution in Tin Chrome Painting in Japan
